Renowned for its biodynamic approach, Château Pichon Comtesse in Pauillac, France, has experienced remarkable success with the implementation of FrostBoss® Frost Fans. "Working with French distributor Banton Lauret, we have integrated FrostBoss® anti-freeze towers as a key element in protecting our vines during critical frost periods," says Benjamin Doursout, Vine and Wine Technician at Château Pichon Comtesse.
With 95 hectares in production and over half the vineyard restructured since 2007, frost protection has become a key priority. "The anti-freeze towers have been an essential part of safeguarding our biodynamic vineyards. The tower which rises to over 10 metres, helps us capture warmer air from higher altitudes and directs it back down to the bud level, effectively raising the temperature around the vines," shares Benjamin.
During the 2023 season, unexpected challenges arose, including sudden rainfall and cold nights in early April. FrostBoss® Frost Fans were instrumental in preventing frost damage to vines with exposed buds, following an early bud break during a mild winter.
